Theodore couldn't complain much about today. Double potions with the Gryffindors, then spending an hour trying to decipher what Quirrell was trying to splutter, and after lunch it had been Charms - his favourite class. Honestly, it couldn't have gone better. Not to mention several packages arriving for him during breakfast which (apart from embarrassing him slightly), earned him some new robes, some books and a lot of sweets.

Today was Theodore's birthday. February 10th, 1992 - he was twelve years old. He knew that the family house elf had acquired most of the presents, but he did receive a card from his Father (which was something). Theodore's father was a very severe, surly-looking wizard who smoked a pipe and smelt like polished boot leather. His fatherly affection didn't span a lot further than checking in every once in a while, and asking if he was doing well with class work. But in saying that, he wasn't a bad Father. He spent a lot of time with Theodore before Hogwarts, trying to educate him by himself.

Now the birthday boy was alone in the Slytherin common room, which he didn't really mind. It was nice to be alone for a bit; even if he was itching to play wizard's chess against someone...

It was Theodore's birthday and of course Daphne knew that it was. They were Housemates and pretty good friends too. At least, Daphne didn't have many friends at all, and she considered Theodore one. Everyone ele was pretty annoying, either because they were bullies or know-it-alls or attention seekers. Some were just ignorant or unintelligible and while that wasn't always annoying, it didn't bode well for conversing with people like that.

Daphne entered the common room, coming back from the Library, when she saw Theodore sitting in there all alone. "Hey, Nott," she said as she took a seat near him. She had already wished him happy
birthday at breakfast, though being only twelve, she hadn't gotten him a present. She could have written away to get help from her parents but then there would be questions of who it was for and were they going to date and so many more questions she didn't want to answer. Plus, Theodore was from a family that her family knew and they would of course try to set them up for life if they thought she had an interest in someone.

"How's your birthday going so far?" Daphne had some mild interest in Theodore, but nothing romantic. But there was enough interest to actually inquire about her day, while she would have had no desire to do so with anyone else.

"Hi Daphne."

They hadn't spoken much today. At breakfast, briefly, but that was about it. He thought it was nice of her to wish him a happy birthday, and from anyone else he probably would've thought it a bother. The cards and presents he received were whisked under the table before anyone could catch a glimpse of the 'happy birthday' wishes printed on them: unfortunately he was just one of these people who didn't like the attention on his birthday. It made him feel sort of lonely, and think longingly of his Mother. In times like those, he was glad most wizards couldn't read minds; or he'd be mortified...

"Yeah, it's been all right thanks..." He couldn't help sounding a little defensive. If it were someone else he'd probably be short with them. Daphne got off lightly. She always did, because she didn't annoy him.

As he shuffled inside armchair he was sitting on, he was momentarily distracted by something sliding to his leg. He pulled away a large box of Bertie Botts, and grimaced. "I suppose my Father never realised I went off these about three years ago. Can't remember if you like them or not, but here you go," He placed them on the low table in front of him. "Have as many as you like. Or all of them. Whatever you like."

His dreary, almost languid eyes rolled up to lock with hers. "Fancy a game of chess, too?" And he smiled a little bit. It was his birthday after all, he was allowed to smile just this once. Usually he looked either very bored, or very annoyed. This may have been a small improvement.

Asking how his day was going was just a common social thing to do. He didn't really want to elaborate and Daphne had no interest in pressing that.

She gave him a half-judging, half-knowing look when he offered her the candy. She didn't like candy. "I sure don't. But leave them there and I'm sure someone else will come along and eat them." There were some hyper kids in their House somehow who she knew would revel at the thought of free candy.

Theodore then offered a game of chess. Daphne wasn't really a fan. At least, she wasn't one of those people who liked to play it all the time in the common room. She didn't really enjoy games much at all, actually. Exploding Snap was even further down her list of things she would like to do. However, she knew that Theodore liked chess and she didn't really hate it. She did appreciate the logic and strategy of the game.

Daphne threw back a half-smile at Theodore, the best she could do. She, too, was usually quite serious in her demeanor. "Sure, why not?" It was his birthday, after all.

Theodore scoffed a little. "Probably," He agreed, getting out the chess board from under the armchair and opening it. The pieces inside of there all looked up at him expectantly, awaiting orders. "It wouldn't surprise me. People around here are usually stupid enough to eat things that are just lying around the common room..."

Call it paranoia, but he wouldn't. He didn't trust people, really.

He placed down the board and the pieces wandered to their positions. Theo wondered whether they'd be taught how the charm worked: he supposed it was similar to moving portraits. A lot more could be achieved with this sort of charm, he thought; rather than making chess pieces and brush strokes move...

"I'm always black, so looks like you're stuck with white," He said this in a very matter-of-fact way, without smiling. White always had that little advantage of going first, he supposed.

Theodore liked Daphne. He wondered what it would be like next year, when they get a whole lot more obnoxious first-years starting in Slytherin house... will either of them be able to stand it? Still, at least they were in Slytherin's house. Those with muggle parents usually went to the other three. He didn't really like the idea of sharing a dormitory with one. Then again, perhaps the new first-years wouldn't be so bad. Maybe they will be a little bit more like Daphne.

"I don't think I ever asked you this..." He began, not realising the following question was a little out of the blue: "But do you have any siblings?" Suddenly he imagined Daphne's possible younger brother, and enjoyed the idea of it. It's not that he had anything in particular against girls, he just thought it would be nice to have a brother-like friend.

Daphne nodded. She didn't really have anything to add to it. Nott was completely right. Even though they were in the best House and Daphne had managed to find at least two like-minded people (Nott included), there were many who were completely daft, like Goyle. Daphne wasn't sure if the Grevilles were daft or just sheep but both were annoying in Daphne's books.

Daphne didn't really care what colour she got. It wasn't really her favourite game (she wasn't even sure she liked games much at all, actually), and plus, this was Nott's birthday, after all. Even if she had a preference, she wouldn't fight it today.

"Sure." Daphne knew enough to know that she had to go first, so she took one of the middle pawns and put it up two spaces.

The year was drawing to a close soon and Daphne wasn't looking forwad to the next batch of first years. She would be a year older and she assumed they would seem even more annoying than most people in her year.

Daphne was a little confused at Nott's question. How did he not know? Surely he saw Astoria at some of the functions their parents dragged them to. Of course, Daphne thought she saw adult Notts far more than Theodore growing up and he wasn't the type to go around networking and trying to meet all of the most prominent purebloods like Malfoy always did. He always made a point of introducing himself.

"Unfortunately." Daphne sighed. "She's younger. Not at Hogwarts yet. I don't think you'd like her anyway." Astoria was always into the things that their mother wanted Daphne to do - dresses, parties, all the girly stuff, really. That wasn't something Daphne enjoyed and since Astoria did, she was of course the favourite. Of course, Daphne got along with their father a bit more as she would be curious about what he was working on and he would show her. She was definitely more of the intellect between the two sisters.

"Do you have any?" Daphne didn't think he did, but maybe they hid one in a closet somewhere. It wasn't beyond old pureblood families to do so.
